- Gargoyles: Monsters in Stone
~Usually Ships in 24 Hours
- -Jennifer Dussling, Peter Church (Illustrator)
stone monsters that sit
Hardcover 48 pages / Published June 1999
This little book, is crammed with good information to give young readers a good deal of information about gargoyles. Gargoyles were placed on churches and other buildings to ward off evil. But, more practically, were often used as rainwater drains. The authors discuss gargoyles' medieval origins and answers some of the perennial questions that surround their purpose and use.
The authors show young readers both the horror and the individuality of gargoyles, those from the medieval past as well as the ones still produced today. Intricately framed artwork, in colors that sometimes seem to glow, has a three-dimensional feeling, with both churches and gargoyles appearing to have the heft of stone. This well written book presents a fine discussion of how a gargoyle is carved, in both in word and artwork.
