Books on Classic Homes and Unusual Styles of Homes
- Storybook Style
~Usually Ships Within 24 Hours
- -Arrol Gellner, Douglas Keister / Hardcover 192 pages / Published October 2001
This book presents an excellent coverage of the Storybook Style of home and a marvelous celebration of one of the twentieth
century's most delightful and whimsical architectural style. This house style presents a hint of of medieval European architecture
in American housing, that was born in the early 1920s and then almost forgotten by the late 1930s. This style of house took its
inspiration from the Hollywood sets that enthralled Americans of the period and that still appeal to our jaded modern eye.
Half timbered and turreted, pinnacled and portcullised, Storybook Style houses were created by architects and builders with
a distinct flair for theater, a love of fine craftsmanship, and a good sense of humor. These attributes made these homes
endearing to the jaded modern eye.
By in large the Storybook Style was a Hollywood product, for the vast public that thronged
theaters for the early Hollywood films went to experience the exotic foreign locales they were
unlikely ever to see in person. In this way they acquired a taste for foreign vernacular
architecture thanks to the movie sets engendered by Hollywood's best architectural talents.
In turn, builders were quick to capitalize on this fascination and built homes evocatively
titled Picardy Village and Normandy Towers in California, and in 1931 Sears, Roebuck offered
a medievalized English cottage in its catalog.
Here then is a wealth of information on an architectural subject that is beautifully enhanced by more than two hundred stunning
color pictures by photographer Doug Keister.

- Tudor Style: Tudor Revival Houses in America from 1890 to the Present
~Usually Ships Within 24 Hours
- -Lee Goff (Author), Paul Rocheleau (Photographer)/ Hardcover 208 pages / Published November 2002
The Tudor house is one of America's keystones and a popular type of home that has attracted homeowners for more than a century.
The Tudor tyles of home basic elements, the steep gabled roofs, mullioned windows made of leaded glass, stuccuo covered walls and half-timbering, are instantly
recognizable and iconic. This book showcases the wide variety of Tudor homes and how American Tudor style differs from their English counterparts.
Renowned photographer Paul Rocheleau and architectural historian Lee Goff have traveled across the United States, from the suburbs of metropolitan New York to
Lake Forest, Illinois, from St. Louis to Los Angeles, capturing the unique Tudor styles each geographic location offers.
The Tudors featured in the book range from modest homes to grand estates, making this a perfectly accessible book for all Tudor homeowners and aficionados.
In addition to displaying the architectural structures of these buildings, Goff examined the history of these houses, why they became so popular in the United States,
and what their appeal is today.
